HUMMELSTOWN, Pa., May 8, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- May 4-10, 2014, is designated as National Pet Week in the United States. This week was created to bring awareness to responsible pet ownership and pet adoption. While many people treat their pets like family, many others don't realize ahead of time the amount of personal and financial responsibility owning a pet can require.

Don't buy a pet on impulse whether it's for you or someone else. The realities of caring for an animal may outweigh the cuteness, and animals of a certain type or size might not be suited to your type of living space. Also, there are many costs associated with owning an animal. In addition to buying food and toys, regular veterinary care is a must as well as vaccinations, parasite control, licenses, and having your pet spayed or neutered. In addition, your pet should be socialized, exercised, and given stimulation while you're not home.

Also consider adoption of shelter and rescue animals when considering getting a pet. Rescued animals make wonderful pets and are just as loving and loyal as any other. For more information on National Pet Week and pet ownership, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) website at http://www.petweek.org/pet-owners.html.

The Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) is the only statewide professional organization of over 2,200 members of the veterinary team from across the Commonwealth. The association, which was established in 1883, strives to advance animal welfare and human health while ensuring the vitality of the veterinary profession. PVMA's website is available at www.pavma.org.
