Ben Sawyer project to be completed three weeks later than planned

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Construction work on the Ben Sawyer Bridge is now set to be completed by June 16, roughly three weeks later than originally planned.

Project managers say work on the bridge was slowed by SCDOT stipulations requiring them to do the major work at night. The original completion date was May 23, they say.

"Hurry up, please," Sullivan's Island resident George Zimmerman says.

Some residents say they are feeling frustration over the nearly-2 mile project and all of the big orange barrels lining the road.

"It's been kind of a long time," Mount Pleasant resident Dennis Dunn says. "You know, I was gone for a month and I thought they were working on it and I get back and not much is done."

Funding for the project is coming from two sources, project managers say. About 80 percent of the costs comes from the Charleston Area Transportation Study Federal Enhancement Grant funds, while the remainder is covered by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax.
