ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man with outstanding warrants for running a chop shop in Anderson County is facing new charges on Friday, including attempting to kill a police dog during a bust, according to the sheriff's office.

Lt. Sheila Cole said deputies were called to a home in Centerville where the suspect, 34-year-old Russell Grant, had been spotted. Cole said Grant had outstanding warrants with the sheriff's office.

When deputies arrived, they found two vehicles that were reported stolen, prompting them to call in additional officers, including a K-9 team, Cole said.

Before entering the home, deputies spoke with Matthew Martin and Amanda Grant, who said Russell Grant had left the home, according to Cole.

Cole said the sheriff's office helicopter crew had been patrolling the area and saw no one leave the home.

According to Cole, Amanda Grant gave verbal consent for the house to be searched. She said it was cleared without the suspect being located. However, sounds were heard beneath the home, leading deputies to believe Russell Grant was in a crawlspace beneath the home, Cole said.

Deputies then obtained a search warrant and the crawlspace was checked by K-9 Hyco and deputies.

Cole said Hyco found Russell Grant in the air conditioning ductwork, where he began to punch and kick the dog.

Cole said he then managed to get his legs around Hyco's lower body and his arms around the dogs neck and attempted to choke out the dog.

Hyco and his handler fought back until the suspect released the dog, Cole said.

According to Cole, Russell Grant continued to resist deputies attempting to take him into custody, but they were able to maneuver him to an air vent opening in the floor where he was taken out.

EMS was called to the home and took Grant to the hospital where he was treated for multiple dog bites, Cole said.

He was later transported to the Anderson County Detention Center and charged with nine counts of operating a chop shop, four counts of resisting arrest and one count of attempting to kill a police dog.

Amanda Grant was taken into custody and charged with three counts of operating a chop shop and one count of hindering officers serving a warrant.

Martin was charged with one count of hindering officers serving a warrant.

Cole said K-9 Hyco was checked by his veterinarian and he will be OK.
