HOLLYWOOD, SC (WCSC) - Family and friends remembered a 14-year-old who drowned while swimming with a friend in a Hollywood pond one week ago.
Genesis Holmes was a 7th grader at Lowcountry Leadership Charter School. The school dismissed students early Monday so they could attend the funeral, which was held in the school's gym.
Charleston County deputies say Holmes and a friend were swimming without permission in a pond off Highway 162. The friend told authorities that they were attempting to swim to an island in the middle of the pond when Holmes disappeared.
Divers found his body a short time after his friend called for help.
The school offered grief counselors as word reached Holmes' teachers and classmates.
Principal Mache Larkin said Holmes was a great young man.
"He had a wonderful personality. All the students loved him," Larkin said.
