CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A husband and wife are going to prison for six years after pleading guilty in connection to the murder of a member of their family in Ridgeville.
Endsley and Mary Grooms were arrested in February of last year, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder. Both will have to serve five years probation when they are released from prison.
Their stepson, Sonny Ray Jones is charged in the same case and is awaiting trial for gunning down Mary Grooms' father, 64-year-old Jimmy Edwards in Ridgeville.
Court documents state Jones snuck up behind Edwards, who was in the backyard of the home checking on his chickens, and shot him three times in the back of the head around 11 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2013.
Jones then turned the weapon, a small-caliber handgun, over to Endsley Grooms to be destroyed, according to investigators.
The suspects proceeded to cover up the crime by misleading the investigation, according to the affidavit.
