COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - Someone taking a chance with either the Mega Millions or Powerball lotteries could win up to a nine-digit jackpot.
Both lotteries have reached the $100 million mark, South Carolina Education Lottery officials say, and that means that back-to-back drawings could produce big winners.
The Mega Millions jackpot stands at a $136 million top prize. Tickets for Friday's 11 p.m. drawing must be purchased by the 10 p.m. deadline. South Carolina has yet to produce a Mega Millions jackpot winner, lottery officials say.
The Powerball jackpot stands at $100 million. Tickets for Saturday night's 10:59 p.m. drawing must be purchased by 9:59 p.m. Saturday. The state has produced seven jackpot-winning Powerball tickets, officials say.
Both lotteries offer the open to multiply lower, non-jackpot prizes by up to five times the normal value for an extra dollar.
Lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea reminds players to keep the enthusiasm in perspective.
"Big jackpots are thrilling, and we want players to have fun, but to, please, play responsibly," Bethea said.
Officials say the odds of winning the top prize in the Mega Millions lottery are roughly one in 258 million, and the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are approximately one in 175 million.
