MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) – Just days after Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks made seemingly racist comments at the commission meeting, her campaign manager is speaking out about what happened. Brooks' campaign manager is Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's wife, Ruby Wharton.

Brooks is under scrutiny for suggesting that a potential contractor is discriminating against African-Americans because the majority of their minority workforce is Hispanic.

Ruby Wharton said she has yet to hear everything that was said, but that Brooks' comments were taken out of context.

"If the whole meeting had been reported and not just a little snippet, then it would be different," said Ruby. "The only thing I'm concerned with is that the examination of everything would be more appropriate to see what context those words came out of. So, it may not be as troubling once you see the full context in which those words were used."

Ruby is the campaign chair of Brooks' juvenile court clerk campaign.

"I haven't spoken to Ms. Brooks about it, but I don't understand why there is all this uproar. She has a right to have her feelings expressed," she said.

In the meantime, her husband, Mayor Wharton told WMC Action News 5 that Brooks' comments are inconsistent with his ways of doing things. However, he would not comment on his wife's support of Brooks' campaign.

"It would demean the seriousness of this to put it in the context of a political race," said Ruby. "That political race will be over; we need to deal with this situation absent from whether it's a political race or what. You might see any kind of sign in my yard where I live on the corner down there, but I'm not going to approach it from a political stance. It's too serious to do that."

Brooks has not spoken on camera with WMC Action News 5, but in an online post, she stood by her comments, which she says are historically correct. On Wednesday, a post on her campaign's Facebook page said she believed the comments were misunderstood.
