MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - It is an alarming health statistic in the Mid-South: experts say nine out of 10 Memphians who are developing kidney disease do not know it. As a result, American Kidney Fund declared May 17 Kidney Action Day in Memphis.

At the Kroc Center, attendees took part in a fun event with a serious purpose.

Tennee Hawkins with the American Kidney Fund says kidney disease often does not present symptoms until it is in the late stages.

"Rates of kidney disease in Memphis are above the national average so that's why screening and early detection are so important," said Hawkins. "And that's letting Memphis residents understand their risk for kidney disease."

Because the two leading causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, the event also offered glucose and blood pressure screenings. Fitness and cooking demonstrations promoted a diet low in salt and fat.

"We have to take charge of our healthy lifestyles and make sure that we're keeping a healthy diet, getting exercise every day, and just knowing our numbers," added Hawkins.

The key to knowing the numbers and what they mean is getting screened to avoid a sometimes silent killer that is not only treatable but preventable.

Last year the American Kidney Fund helped more than 600 Memphians pay for dialysis.
