CofC Splits Senior Day Doubleheader In Regular Season Finale

College of Charleston won the first game of Senior Day to set up a de facto regular season championship matchup, but the William & Mary Pride won the final game of the series to take the CAA crown and the top seed in next week’s CAA Baseball Tournament. College of Charleston will be the two seed in the conference tournament.

After winning the second-longest game in NCAA history on Friday night in a 23-inning battle, College of Charleston won a 5-2 decision in Saturday’s first game to move within one game of a conference title. However, the Tribe’s offense woke up for 16 hits and 6 runs in a 6-0 win in the final game of the series, clinching the top seed.

In the first game on Saturday, CofC starter Bailey Ober (8-2) notched his ninth quality start of the season as he pitched six pristine innings in a seven-inning game for the win. Ober scattered five hits and allowed just two runs, one earned, which both came in the first inning. He struck out nine batters and walked just one.

Michael Hanzlik (13) then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to get his league-best 13th save of the season.

CofC rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second inning as Charleston struck for four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The Cougars saw walks from Pappas and Welke get runners to second and third with two outs. A wild pitch from William & Mary’s John Sheehan (5-5) allowed one run to score. Brandon Glazer then reached on a fielding error from Tim Hoehn that kept the inning alive and scored another run. After a double from Champ Rowland, Blake Butler drove in two more runs with an RBI single, making it 4-2.

Rowland added an insurance run RBI in the sixth inning to put the Cougars up 5-2 and put the game out of reach.

Butler led the offense with three hits, while Rowland had two.

In the second game, CofC’s Tyler Thornton and William & Mary’s Mitchell Aker and Bryson Kauhaahaa battled through four scoreless innings.

William & Mary was then able to break through with one run in the fifth inning on a leadoff walk from Derek Lowe and a sacrifice bunt from Josh Smith. Tim Hoehn then doubled to center field to score Lowe and the Tribe took a 1-0 lead. The visitors added to the lead with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings off eight total hits.

Charleston was unable to crack Kauhaahaa (1-2) who picked up his first win with 6.2 innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Hissey led the Tribe with three hits and two RBIs, while Kevin Nutter had three hits and two runs scored.

The Cougar pitching staff allowed just eight earned runs in 39.0 innings over the weekend, posting a composite ERA of 1.85 against the nation’s second-best pitching staff.

CofC concludes the regular season with 38 wins, the most regular season wins since the 2010 season when CofC finished 44-19. This is the third-straight season that CofC is the two seed in its respective conference tournament.

College of Charleston will next play the winner of the UNCW-JMU game next Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the second round of the CAA tournament.
