CPD transportation officer accused of sexually assaulting woman

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a Charleston Police Department transportation officer is accused of sexually assaulting a woman he was transporting to jail.

Investigators arrested 43-year-old Kermit A. Jenkins on Tuesday and charged him with second-degree sexual misconduct.

Police say the incident happened around 2:05 a.m. on May 4, 2014 after the victim was arrested on an unrelated charge. A police report states Jenkins picked up the victim for transportation to the Al Cannon Detention Center.

According to investigators, while en route to the jail between 2:05 a.m. and 3:03 a.m., the victim alleges that Jenkins reached underneath her skirt and rubbed his fingers over her genitals.

The victim came to the Charleston Police Department on May 6, 2014 and filed a complaint with the department’s Professional Standards Office.

CPD officials say Jenkins was placed on administrative duties with pay on May 6, and was placed on administrative leave without pay on May 14.

Authorities say based upon his arrest, he is being terminated from the department.

Police say Jenkins, a non-sworn employee, was hired by the Charleston Police Department on December 17, 2012.

Charleston police are continuing the investigation.
