Ober Leads College of Charleston All-CAA Selections

College of Charleston baseball freshman Bailey Ober led CofC’s nine All-CAA selections by winning the CAA Rookie of the Year award on Tuesday night at the CAA baseball banquet on the campus of UNC-Wilmington.

Ober continued an impressive run for CofC baseball players as he represents the 12th time in the last 13 seasons that Charleston has won Player, Pitcher, Rookie or Coach of the Year honors in its respective conference.

A freshman pitcher from Charlotte, N.C., Ober led the league with three Pitcher of the Week honors and two Rookie of the Award awards. In the regular season, he posted a 1.42 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP which ranked first in the CAA and led all NCAA freshmen pitchers. Ober finished with an 8-2 record and a league-best .186 opposing batting average. His 4.11 strikeout-to-walk ratio ranks third in the conference. His current season ERA would rank third all-time in CofC history if the season ended today.

Along with his Rookie of the Year award, Ober was named All-CAA First Team and had a place on the All-CAA Freshman Team.

Charleston’s second All-CAA First Teamer was junior Gunnar Heidt. Earning a spot as an All-Conference utility player, Heidt led the Cougars with a .335 batting average and 15 stolen bases, ranking third in the conference. He led Charleston with a .417 on-base percentage, scoring 39 runs on 55 base hits, despite missing time with a hand injury.

The Cougars led all squads with four players on the All-CAA Second Team.

Catcher Ryan Welke hit .317 in conference play and ranked second among league catchers with a .500 slugging percentage against CAA competition. Welke is second on the team with four home runs.

Third-baseman Carl Wise ranks second in the CAA with 48 RBIs. He is in the top 10 in the nation with nine sacrifice flies, and leads the Cougars with a .375 average with runners in scoring position.

Transferring from Towson after Tommy John surgery, Friday night starter Taylor Clarke has been nearly unstoppable all season. His 9-3 record tied for first in the conference while his 2.44 ERA ranks fifth. He has held opponents to a .209 batting average, ranking third in the league. Clarke has tallied eight quality starts including seven in his last eight.

CofC’s final selection on the Second Team was senior closer Michael Hanzlik. After starting the year as the bullpen setup man, Hanzlik took over the closer role and picked up a league-best 13 saves, which ranks 12th in the nation. In his last eight appearances, he has made five saves and won two games.

College of Charleston put three players on the All-CAA Rookie Team, including Rookie of the Year winner Ober. Sunday starter Tyler Thornton became a critical cog in CofC’s league-best weekend rotation. He earned a CAA Pitcher of the Week honor after a three-hit outing at Hofstra and he’s won four of his last six starts. Thornton has a starter ERA of 2.72 with just six walks in 12 games started.

First-baseman Nick Pappas has been a solid defensive presence at first base, posting a fielding percentage of .991. He hit .262 on the season with 20 RBIs. Pappas hit three home runs and knocked the walk-off hit to beat Coastal Carolina in the 12th inning in the final week of the season.

Clarke was also College of Charleston’s representative on the CAA All-Academic team.
