NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A woman was injured after being hit by a police car in Murfreesboro on Wednesday night.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says an officer was on patrol on Highway 96 near Market Place when a woman in dark clothing stepped out into the lane he was driving in around 10 p.m.

According to the THP report, the woman was not at a crosswalk or in a well-lit area when she was hit.

The officer, 26-year-old Darryln Sanders, said he didn't see the woman and wasn't able to react quickly enough to avoid hitting her.

Officials say Sanders did not have his blue lights on and was not responding to a call at the time of the crash.

The pedestrian, 54-year-old Virginia Bissinger, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious injuries. She is in serious but stable condition at this time.

THP says this may have just been a tragic accident.
