CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCSC) - A new edition of the Spoleto Festival USA is ready to open in Charleston.
The 38th season of the internationally known arts festival begins on Friday with the traditional speeches, brass fanfare and confetti floating in the air in front of Charleston City Hall.
According to Charleston police, Broad Street between Meeting Street and Church Street will be closed until 2 p.m. Friday for opening ceremonies, which begin at noon.
The festival concludes on June 8 with a concert and fireworks at Middleton Place on the Ashley River.
This year's Spoleto features three operas, a show by Ireland's Gate Theatre and a range of musical performances including concerts by singer Kat Edmonson and banjoists Béla Fleck and his wife, Abigail Washburn.
In addition, there's dance, classical music concerts and other events. In all, there are 148 performances by 63 artists and ensembles.
