Coca-Cola Speed Street brings social media boom to Uptown Charlotte


As thousands of people pour into Uptown Charlotte for Coca-Cola Speed Street, part of the 600 Festival leading up to the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, Twitter and Facebook will be blowing up.

According to AT&T, during last year's three day event, AT&T customers used 357 gigabytes of data. That is the equivalent of more than one million social media posts with photos, spokesman Josh Gelinas said.

"They are sharing the experience and they got these faster networks that allow them to upload to Twitter and Facebook, whether its photographs, a video or just a message to a friend. They want to share what they are doing over these social media and data networks," Gelinas said.

Social media is clearly changing the way consumers experience events. Companies, like AT&T, are accommodating to this behavior.  

"In Uptown, and specifically where Speed Street is happening, we have what's called a Distributed Antennae system, essentially mini cell sites atop light poles," Gelinas told WBTV. "That makes it possible for us to deliver great service between giant skyscrapers."

Gelinas said there was a 40 percent increase in social media activity during day one of Speed Street.
