NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Nationwide cameras focus in on student athletics as they sign a contract with the college they plan to play sports at. However, on Friday at Hoggard High School it was the student scholars that took center stage. The New Hanover County School hosted the first Academic Signing Day for students.  Students who received scholarships to go to colleges and universities were honored in front of their teachers, peers and parents.

"I think a lot of the time it's like oh the nerd, you just get pushed to the side, so it's pretty nice to be recognized from the academic standpoint," said Rachel Delange who received the Park Scholarship, a full ride to NC State.

"It makes me proud to see academics are appreciated a lot more than they used to be," said Da'Shaun Harrison who will be going to Morehouse College in Atlanta and received several scholarships including the Morehouse Merit Scholarship. He says the last four years were a lot of work, but well worth it. It's a sentiment many of the other students at Friday's signing agreed with.

"For all four years in high school I had to bust my butt off to go to the dream school I wanted to go to so bad," said Romello Robinson, who says a scholarship is making it possible to go to his ‘dream school', EC Central.

Hoggard officials hope to make this Academic Signing an annual tradition.
