BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
Students at Town Creek Elementary School in Brunswick County spent Friday celebrating the fact that they completed 100 days of reading. Officials say the project started last September and it was made possible because of a grant from ATMC.
Teachers say 196 students completed the goal
and about half of them actually read for about 200 nights.
Friday, there was face painting, cotton candy,
carnival games and three bouncy houses for the students who successfully completed
Organizers say the positive motivation helps
the kids learn to read and learn to love to read, a skill they'll need for the
rest of their life.
"It helps them with their imagination, it
helps them with their ability to understand things later on," Croslyn Johnson a
teacher at the school who helped organize the project explained. "In kindergarten
through 2nd grade they are learning to read, in 3rd
through 5th grade they are reading to learn, if they don't get it
now, it's really going to hurt them later on.
