Henrico apartment fire displaces 26 people, including 4 children

Dozens of people are looking for places to stay after a fire ripped through a Henrico apartment building Friday evening.

Eleven apartments on the 4400 block of Bramblewood Lane were damaged, displacing 22 adults and 4 children.

"When we arrived here, we couldn't get near the place because it was all blocked off and the fire trucks were here and the police had the entrances blocked," said Pat Mays, a resident of the apartment building.

Charisse Harvey was inside her apartment when the fire broke out.  She smelled smoke and heard the fire alarm.  She immediately changed clothes and heard a noise at her front door.

"When I got the clothes on, the fireman was at the door saying get out the building," Harvey said.

It took fire crews less than 30 minutes to put out the blaze.  Investigators say the fire was caused by an electrical fixture in a storage room on a second floor patio.

Harvey lives just below where the fire broke out.

"My apartment is the bottom one with all the boards on the windows and sliding glass doors.  I came out this back door right here and I look up and that was just orange," Harvey said.

With most of her possessions now gone, Harvey is now looking towards the future while treasuring the memories she has left.

"You never think that it can happen to you but it can.  I just thank God that we are all safe.  Material possessions can be replaced; lives can't," she said.

The Red Cross has reached out to all of the families affected and is providing assistance to 21 people.  No one was injured in the fire.

Fire officials have ruled the fire accidental.
