Local cemeteries reopen in time for Memorial Day

(WMC) - This holiday weekend, families with loved ones buried in two Memphis cemeteries will finally be able to visit them. 

This time last year Mount Carmel and Hollywood cemeteries were unapproachable until the community stepped in.

On Saturday, it was a celebration for the group Friends of Mount Carmel and Hollywood cemeteries.

In September, State Representative Raumesh Akbari joined the fight to restore both cemeteries. After numerous community cleanups in the past year, volunteers got both properties ready for visitors.

"Last year you could not visit it the grass was almost as tall as I am," said Akbari. 

A reopening ceremony was held just in time for the Memorial Day holiday.

"The ability to be able to come out this year and be able to get in both of these cemeteries is just a huge blessing," said organizer Alice Waller. "We took the fight to court and to the community and to the businesses and God has just shown out and shown up we've had awesome support."

The group is not done improving the cemeteries. They would like to add walking trails and art work to create a peaceful green space in the community.
