FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - The beach replenishment project on Folly Beach will continue for another month, but plenty of Memorial Day beach-goers are getting their first look at the project's key feature -- a large pipe laid across the sand.
"It's ugly; it's real ugly," Beach-goer Fonda Cross said.
The pipe was laid in January, as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project to repair portions of the beach that have eroded. The project manager says the pipe carries a mixture of water and sand from a dredge three miles into the ocean.
Painted warnings tell beach-goers to keep their distance from the pipe due to the high pressure of its contents. However, many people are ignoring the warning and are walking on, or draping their towels along the pipe.
The project is expected to be completed at the end of June.
