GOLETA, CA (RNN) - The University of California, Santa Barbara held a vigil on Tuesday afternoon following a mass shooting that claimed half a dozen lives last week.

Thousands of people filled Harder Stadium to remember those who died.

"Let's keep in mind that these were individuals who each left a mark on the world around them. Their individuality should not be obscured by the aggregate of their shared deaths," said Janet Napolitano, president of the University of California system.

"As we reflect on this tragedy, we can all find some comfort in what these young men and women accomplished in their lives and in the outpouring of support and compassion from the entire university community and beyond."

UCSB canceled classes on Tuesday, declaring a day of mourning.

Richard Martinez, a parent of one of the victims, spoke at the vigil, urging the audience to chant "not one more" in reference to recent mass shootings across the country.

Vocal Motion, an all-female a capella group at UCSB, also performed during the vigil.

Police said 22-year-old Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured 13 others last Friday night. They said Rodger stabbed three men inside his apartment and later shot two women outside a sorority house. Then he traveled to a deli near UCSB. From his black BMW, he allegedly sprayed bullets into a deli and killed one more person. Rodger then turned the gun on himself.

The shooter is the son of Hunger Games assistant director Peter Rodger.
