Police find mobile meth lab at Citadel Mall after man tracks stolen vehicle

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A St. George man who was tracking his stolen vehicle led Charleston investigators to a mobile meth lab at the Citadel Mall Wednesday night.

At 7:30 p.m. the Charleston Police Department responded to the mall in reference to a stolen vehicle. When officers got on scene they met with a man who said his car had been stolen, and he had tracked the vehicle using GPS to the mall's parking lot.

As authorities were investigating the vehicle, they found a black duffel bag in the trunk of the car.

When investigators opened the duffel bag they smelled a "strong gas-like" odor and saw several bottles containing unknown substances.

Officers say they also noticed a clear plastic water bottle containing a yellow substance with small black flakes in it.

Police requested the fire department and Hazmat as officers set up a perimeter around the car in the area of the King Stret Grille and Planet Fitness.

Emergency crews reported to police that there were several key ingredients missing from the bag making it an inactive mobile meth lab.

No injuries were reported.
