DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Ridgeville man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his step grandfather.
Sonny Ray Jones pleaded guilty to murder and armed robbery in connection to the 2013 death of 64-year-old Jimmy Edwards.
Court documents state Jones snuck up behind Edwards, who was in the backyard of the home checking on his chickens, and shot him three times in the back of the head on the night of Feb. 1, 2013.
According to investigators, Jones then turned the gun over to Endsley Grooms, Jones' stepfather, to be destroyed.
An affidavit states Endsley Grooms along with Jones' mother, Mary Grooms, proceeded to cover up the crime by misleading the investigation.
Earlier this month, Endsley and Mary Grooms pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder and were sentenced to six years in prison.
Both will have to serve five years probation when they are released from prison.
