(RNN) - President Barack Obama announced that about 9,800 troops will remain in Afghanistan after 2014 if the Afghan government signs a security agreement with the U.S.

The University of California, Santa Barbara held a memorial following a rampage over the weekend that left six people dead. A man stabbed three people in his apartment before opening fire on the streets of Isla Vista, CA, and turning the gun on himself.

Well-known poet and author Maya Angelou has died. The Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient was 86 years old.
