JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County Commissioners voted Wednesday to set up a referendum vote for Birmingham's proposed school tax.

The school system wants to raise property taxes to support classroom improvements.

Under state law, the county must pay for the vote. Commissioners say it's $250,000 that they didn't budget for. The commission wanted to include the vote in the general election to cut down on costs but School Board President Randall Woodfin says the board wanted a seperate voting day.

"There is so much going on with regards with individual votersThis is a single issue campaign. This is pretty much different verses a candidate running. So we wanted to separte it for that reason," Woodfin said.

The vote will be held Sept. 9, 2014.
