RALEIGH, NC (WECT) -

Victims of state-sponsored sterilization in North Carolina could receive compensation about nine months earlier than expected, if a proposal inside the $21 billion state House budget plan is approved.

The spending bill to be debated on the floor of the House Thursday includes a proposal to split the compensation to Eugenics victims into two payments, with the first being sent no later than October 31, 2014. Under the budget bill passed by the General Assembly in 2013, payments to qualified recipients were to be made after June 30, 2015.

The second payment would be sent to victims within 90 days of all appeals being heard from anyone who claimed to be a victim and was denied eligibility. The deadline for claimants is June 30, 2014.

Lawmakers set aside $10 million in 2013 to compensate Eugenics victims. The amount each victim will receive depends on how many claimants are validated by the North Carolina Industrial Commission.
