Charleston Veterans Hospital: Nurses moved following whistleblower report

Posted: Updated:
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Veteran’s Hospital is addressing questions about a whistleblower’s complaint that two nurses in mental health were treating patients but were not certified.

A hospital spokeswoman said the nurses worked in mental health for several years before joining Charleston’s VA hospital, but did not hold certification.

The hospital was contacted by the US Office of Special Counsel, and in response,  moved the nurses to other areas in the hospital. One of those nurses is now pursing mental health certification.

The spokeswoman said the hospital reviewed the care provided by the nurses and determined there were  “no negative findings.”

The employee who filed the complaint, the whistleblower, left the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center in 2012 to be closer to family, according to the spokeswoman.

On Wednesday night, Live 5 News reported alleged cases of retribution against whistleblowers in South Carolina VA Hospitals are under investigation.

The hospital spokeswoman said, “Assistance provided by this employee to correct an oversight at our facility is appreciated.”
