COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The trial of a former South Carolina State University trustee facing public corruption charges is getting underway.
Opening statements are expected Monday in the trial of Jonathan Pinson.
The former trustee is accused of racketeering and fraud, as well as trying to get the Orangeburg university to buy land from a Florida developer in exchange for a Porsche SUV for himself as a thank-you gift.
Prosecutors last week agreed to dismiss two counts of wire fraud, one count of money laundering and one count of lying to investigators, but Pinson still faces dozens of charges. The government is seeking a 22-year sentence.
Six people charged in the case have pleaded guilty and are expected to testify against Pinson.
