Jerry Lee Manigault charged in another elderly woman's death

BLUFFTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a 53-year-old Hollywood man accused of killing a 77-year-old Charleston County woman is now being charged in the death of another elderly woman.

The Bluffton Police Department announced on Monday that Jerry Lee Manigault will be charged with the murder of 70-year-old Polly Ann Mitchell. Manigault is also facing charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, grand larceny and first-degree burglary in Mitchell's death.

Manigault is currently locked up facing charges of murder, kidnapping and strong armed robbery in the death of 77-year-old Julia Ann Mudgett of Hollywood.

Officials with the Bluffton PD say an investigation revealed that there was sufficient evidence to support charging Manigault for the homicide and sexual battery of Mitchell.

Investigators say in the early morning hours of May 12, Manigault broke into Mitchell's home on Buck Island Road in Bluffton. A police report states Manigault then used aggravated force to sexually assault the victim, and killed her. According to police, Manigault also stole $2,000 worth of property from Mitchell's home.

Manigault was originally arrested on May 12 on charges of failing to re-register as a sex offender, and named as a suspect in Julia Ann Mudgett's death on May 14.

Investigators with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say that between May 4 and May 6, Manigault broke into Mudgett's home on Toogoodoo Road and killed her. CCSO reports state Manigault then stole Mudgett's car.

Mudgett's body was found in a wooded area not to far from her home.
