College of Charleston, Clemson bill dies

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - A bill to expand the College of Charleston into a research university and allow Clemson University to speed construction projects has died in the General Assembly.

House and Senate members couldn't work out a compromise Tuesday. House members were worried about losing oversight over Clemson's projects. Senators questioned why the College of Charleston needed to be declared a research university.

Sen. Harvey Peeler says he thinks both proposals can pass quickly in January after more study. But next year is the start of a new session and all bills must start from scratch.

Rep. Jim Merrill says delaying help for the College of Charleston will be costly. The Charleston Republican says companies like Boeing want to know why the Lowcountry college lacks specialty programs like logistics.
