Employee shot and killed at trucking company

Posted: Updated:

Douglas County sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly shooting at a trucking company.

They were called to the J.B. Hunt trucking lot at 603 Thornton Rd. early Sunday morning.

When deputies arrived, they found the body of John L. Malone, 48, outside the building. They say the man worked at the trucking company.

According to investigators, co-workers of Malone say the man and his girlfriend were having difficulties. Malone had been dating the woman for about 18 months.

That relationship came to an end on Sunday. "She got out of the car, shot him multiple times, got back in the car and left," said Lt. Glenn Daniel with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

According to Daniel, deputies found the girlfriend about 30 minutes after they found Malone's body. She was found about a mile away, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in the car she had driven away in.

Malone's neighbor, John Emmett, described him as a friendly, helpful man who would cut part of his lawn in exchange for the use of his mower. "He didn't have a lawn mower at the time, and I said, ‘Well I've got one that I really can't use very much myself,'" explained Emmett. Malone's neighbor has Type 2 diabetes and is currently confined to a wheelchair.

Emmett was shocked to hear what happened to his neighbor and saddened to know he had lost a friend.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the murder-suicide continues for the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

"You have a lot of unanswered questions," said Daniel. "You have to do a lot of investigative work, you have to interview the families, you have to interview people that was associated with them, and it just takes a lot of time to try to find out what happened here."
