MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton was involved in a car accident on Sunday afternoon.

The mayor was okay on Sunday evening and the driver of the other vehicle is being ticketed for the crash.

It was a unique scenario, with responders called to the scene just days after the Memphis City Council approved the mayor's proposed cuts to their health care.

The wreck involving Mayor A C Wharton's city vehicle brought the intersection of Park Avenue and Echles Street to a screeching halt just after 4 p.m.

Police say the driver of the yellow Ford Focus was not paying attention and rear-ended the mayor's black Cadillac at a stop light. Both air bags in the Focus deployed and the driver was taken to the hospital.

According to police, Wharton was a passenger in the car, and was able to walk away from the crash.

"He was a little shaken up and he got out to kind of walk it off," said MPD Major Michael Jones.

When neighbors saw the mayor, he took time to give out hugs and greet a family at the accident scene.

Police Director Toney Armstrong responded to the scene, and Wharton's car appeared to have no damage.

The driver will be ticketed for failure to maintain proper control, failure to maintain a safe lookout and failure to have insurance.
