HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Super Bowl might serve as one of the biggest annual watch parties in the United States, but the World Cup appears to have turned the art of the get-together into a month-long event for American sports fans.

Hundreds of people gathered Sunday night at Huntsville's Straight to Ale Brewery to watch the U.S. take on Portugal. Many other sports bars and restaurants throughout the region were similarly packed with soccer fans.

Even the house party takes on bigger proportions where soccer fans are concerned. Matt Reed and his roommates converted the roof of their Harvest home into a giant billboard - advertising their love of the game, complete with a representation of the World Cup 2014 logo.

"They're out there fighting for us in Brazil; we just wanted to represent them like they're representing us," Reed said. "We feel like this is the least we can do. We want them to feel our support and try to make soccer bigger here in America."

This isn't the first time Reed and his roommates have "chalked up" some fanaticism at their home - they have also adorned the shingles in the visage of the Olympic rings and the American flag.
