MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - A 15-year police veteran assigned to the Organized Crime Unit ended up on the other side of the law after he was accused of driving drunk and crashing his car early Sunday morning.

Police say just before 2 a.m., off-duty officer Terence Dabney crashed his unmarked city vehicle into a 2007 Dodge Caliber at East Parkway and Walker Avenue.

Dabney's fellow officers say his eyes were glossy and blood shot when they arrived on the scene. Police describe Dabney as having slurred speech and needing objects to keep his balance.

According to an affidavit, a witness told police they saw Dabney fall from his city vehicle and could barely walk.

The driver of the other vehicle was found to be at fault, and cited for improper right turn.

Dabney went to the hospital in non-critical condition and was later charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and refusing a breathalyzer test.

WMC Action News 5 went by Dabney's home in East Memphis, but knocks went unanswered.

Neighbors were surprised to hear the news of the arrest and offered a word of advice for anyone considering getting behind the wheel after drinking.

"You can expect that from anybody, cops, anybody," said Anilkir Cerezo. "Just don't drink and drive. If you're gonna drink just stay home. It's not just your life, it's everybody else's life. Could be your family member."

Dabney was released on bond on Sunday and is set to face a judge on Monday.
