Show your Palmetto State Pride this weekend with Carolina Day events and a summertime party comes to an end in this week's 5 Around Town.
PARTY AT THE POINT
The season finale to the "Party at the Point" summer concert series in Mount Pleasant is Friday night. Departure: The Journey Tribute Band will close out the season at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. Admission is $7 for the event from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. If you miss the last show of the summer, don't worry, Party at the Point returns for the fall, Friday September 5th. Check out the Event Facebook page for more information.
The nation will celebrate Independence Day next week, but Saturday it's our chance to recognize Carolina Day. This is the 238th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan's Island. On June 28, 1776 the 2nd South Carolina Regiment stopped an attack by the British fleet in Charleston Harbor. Fort Moultrie will offer a weekend of free events including musket and artillery demonstrations and re-enactments. The fort will be open for free Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. The 246th Army Band will perform a concert Saturday night at 7:00 pm. The Powder Magazine downtown will give "2-for-1" admission to anyone who mentions "Carolina Day." The South Carolina Historical Society also has commemorative events including a church service at St. Michael's Church at 10 am, a procession from Washington Park to White Point Garden at 11 am, concluding with a wreath-laying ceremony at Jasper Monument in White Point Garden at 11:30 am.
