(WMC) - Several hours of steady rain has forced some Mid-South residents to evacuate their homes and vehicles, relocate to a shelter.

On Sunday, Memphis firefighters rescued seven residents of the Wheel Estate Mobile Home Park in Whitehaven due to flooding caused by rising water. The victims were taken to a shelter opened by the City of Memphis at the Hickory Hill Community Center, located at 3910 Ridgeway Road.

"Many creeks and river tributaries are near the top of their banks. Storm drains are also full which could lead to more flooding," said Bob Nations, Director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness.

In southeast Shelby County, high flood water forced some residents to remove furniture from their homes. According to the Shelby County Office of Preparedness, dispatchers received nearly 60 calls about high water.

Abandoned vehicles were left sitting at Winchester Road at Tchulahoma Road, and along Germantown Road near Wolf River Boulevard.

"Representatives from law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for high water as they patrol neighborhoods throughout Shelby County. Additionally, firefighters, emergency medical services, public works and Memphis Light, Gas and Water personnel are at our Shelby County Emergency Operations Center tracking problems caused by the high water," added Director Nations.

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies closed Memphis-Arlington Road between Arlin and Chambers Chapel Road on Sunday, just before 2 p.m.
