Firefighters blame grill for causing early morning apartment fire

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Firefighters say an early morning apartment fire in Columbia has left a dozen people without a home.

Columbia Fire Department spokesman Brick Lewis says crews were called out to the Cypress Run apartments, which is located off Broad River Road, around 3:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Lewis says after investigating, the cause of the fire was determined to be a combination of the contents of a grill not extinguished and left unattended.

According to Lewis, the contents burned through a third floor deck and on to second floor deck which resulted in the accidental fire.

Lewis says the majority of the damage is contained to the third and second floor decks and several apartments also received water damage. Total damages are estimated at around $55,000.

No one was injured and the American Red Cross along with Cypress Run management are assisting the displaced.
