Folly Beach pet ban denied

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - An ordinance to ban pets from a section of Folly beach was shot down in a five to one city council vote, Tuesday night.

The proposed law would have banned dogs, cats and other domestic animals from the Charleston County Park at the end of West Ashley Avenue.

The ordinance restricted access to about one mile of the beach. The other five miles would have continued to be open to pets.

According to the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service, the ends of Folly Beach are ideal areas for shorebirds and seabirds.

Officials say since the county park was renourished, flocks of birds have started roosting along the park beach.

They say leashed and unleashed dogs alike, disturb that process.
