King cheers on nephew in Tour de France

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Tour de France is one of the most famous events in all of sports. It may happen in Europe, but Richmond is represented at the Tour, as River City native Ben King is competing for the Garmin-Sharp team in an event that features the best cyclists from around the globe.

King was born in Richmond and moved to Charlottesville at a young age. He comes from a family rich in cycling. His father, Mark, was a professional. His brother is a professional as well, and his uncle, Dan, who still resides in Richmond, is known on the local racing circuit.

Dan won the weekly bike race at Richmond's Bryan Park on Tuesday, but a lot of his time lately has been keeping up with his nephew in Europe. Dan is enjoying cheering on Ben from the other side of the world and says he serves as the messenger to many in the cycling community on how his nephew is faring in the Tour de France.

Dan also praises his nephew for his work ethic. Ben started cycling later than most professionals do, waiting until he was 15 years old, and has worked hard to become one of the best in the world.
