AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - The Oakland University Board of Trustees has selected George W. Hynd as the suburban Detroit school's next president.
Hynd formerly served as provost and executive vice president of academic affairs for the College of Charleston in South Carolina. The board made his appointment official Wednesday. He succeeds University Vice President Betty Youngblood, who has served as interim president for the past year.
Youngblood became interim president after the sudden retirement of Gary Russi on June 12, 2013. That's the same day the university fired Russi's wife Beckie Francis as women's basketball coach. Oakland has said that Francis physically and emotionally abused players.
Francis denies the allegations.
About 20,000 students attend Oakland. Its campus spans 1,443 acres in the Oakland County cities of Auburn Hills and Rochester Hills.
