ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) - A nearly 200-pound loggerhead sea turtle is to be released into the Atlantic Ocean after being saved from blindness at the Sea Turtle Hospital at the South Carolina Aquarium.
The turtle, named Briar, will be released Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Isle of Palms County Park.
The adult female turtle was found stranded in Myrtle Beach more than a year ago.
Briar was emaciated and anemic and hospital workers feared she might not survive. But the turtle responded to treatment and regained 50 pounds, nearly her normal weight.
Staffers then noticed she was having trouble finding her food in her tank at the hospital.
The problem was cataracts on her eyes. The cataracts were removed in surgery in April and now Briar is ready to return to the wild.
