Report: Fugitive leads police on wrong way chase on North Bridge

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

North Charleston PD officials say a 33-year-old fugitive was arrested after leading police on a chase that ended after the suspect attempted to drive against traffic on the North Bridge in West Ashley.

Investigators charged John Thomas Jones with failure to stop for blue lights, driving under suspension and possession of cocaine.

On Monday evening, an officer was patrolling the area of Dorchester Road and Kent Avenue when he saw Jones driving a car with a Florida license tag.

The officer reported he had numerous contact with Jones and knew his license was suspended, and had active warrants through North Charleston PD and the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

According to police, as the officer was confirming Jones' warrant information with dispatch, he saw Jones pull into a gas station with a female passenger.

Police say after dispatch confirmed the active warrants for Jones, another police officer began to approach Jones to take him into custody.

A police report states Jones then entered his car while the gas pump was still in use, started the vehicle and fled the scene with his passenger.

A car chase then ensued during which police say Jones disregarded stop signs and failed to stop for police officers.

According to police, when Jones got to the North Bridge on Cosgrove Avenue he began to cut off other motorists and slow down.

One of the police officers in the pursuit reported that he saw a black object, which appeared to be a gun, being thrown from the passenger window of Jones' car into the Ashley River.

NCPD officials say Jones then traveled over the concrete median divider on the bridge and traveled against traffic while he began to decelerate.

Police say they were able to stop traffic ahead of Jones and take him into custody.
