TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

With the start of school just around the corner, the Tuscaloosa City Schools is hosting a back-to-school event Saturday, July 19.

But this event isn't targeted at students; it's aimed at getting parents ready for the new year.

The Tuscaloosa City Schools' Parenting Academy will present the "Raising Parenting Skills to Higher Expectations" event.

The Parenting Academy is made up of parent liaisons at some of the district's schools. The liaisons are there to help facilitate the relationship between parents and the schools as a way to improve student success.

The topics covered at the workshop will be Communication and Attendance, How Boys and Girls Learn Differently, Technology, and Health and Wellness.

There is no cost to attend, and there will be an activity area for children (kindergarten through fifth grade) during the sessions.

Westlawn Middle School Parent Liaison and longtime educator Gloria Hamner said one of the goals of the workshop is making parents more comfortable. She says any anxiety a parent has about school will likely transfer to their child.

"Your attitude will spread over to your children," Hamner said. "So, before they even come to school, you need to sit down and just have a conversation. You know, 'It's the first day of school, and we're going to be excited.'"

Hamner also stressed the importance of routine for parents and students, including arriving at school before the start time, and doing homework soon after the school day ends.

She also says technology can be a great tool in reinforcing what students are learning in the classroom, and stresses that parents need to closely monitor their child's use of technology.

Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. The opening session begins at 9 a.m. and the sessions will end at noon. Central High School is located at 905 15th Street in Tuscaloosa.
