Two parents have been charged with unlawful conduct towards a child after Richland County investigators say they were unable to afford milk for their child.

Ashley Cheatham, 22, and Samuel Green, 20, were both transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center shortly after their arrests.

According to an incident report from the Richland County Sheriff's Department, the Richland County Department of Social Services contacted sheriff's deputies because of suspected neglect by the parents of a 2 1/2 month old.

The report goes on to say the child was admitted to Palmetto Health Richland because it began to have seizures on July 12.

Deputies say they discovered the child was only being fed water for five days because the parents could not afford to buy food for him. Both parents provided sworn written statements to the sheriff's department admitting to that fact.

Sheriff's department Lt. Curtis Wilson said Sheriff Leon Lott called this a "terrible and tragic situation."

Bond for both was set at $75,000. As of Saturday morning, Cheatham and Green are still in jail.
