COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Colleton County Coroner's Office say a 21-year-old was killed in an accident on I-95 Monday morning.
Coroner's have identified the victim as Jakell Whittington from Dillon, South Carolina. Officials say Whittington died of smoke inhalation.
Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say the accident happened around 3:05 a.m. on I-95 North near mile marker 61. Officials say the vehicle was traveling north when the driver ran the vehicle off the side of the road. Troopers say the driver then lost control, came back on the interstate then went back off into the median, hitting several trees.
Officials say six people were inside the vehicle. One person died while the other five people were taken to area hospitals.
The accident remains under investigation.
