CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - According to a recent report by Smart Growth America, South Carolina ranked 4th for most dangerous in the country for those getting around on foot. The state's top five ranking came as little surprise to Trooper Hannah Wimberly.
"Most of the time it's actually the pedestrian's fault."
On the peninsula jay walkers run rampant, despite the number of crosswalks and signals. Wimberly says it's a bigger issue in the rural parts of the state where crosswalks and sidewalks are a luxury.
"South Carolina has a lot of rural areas, especially out in the country where people are walking to the store or walking at night time is a big problem."
She says there are precautions drivers and walkers can take. Wimberly says drivers need to make sure they look in both directions when making a right turn. She says people have a tendency to only look left. And, if you are walking, Wimberly says walk facing the traffic. She says that might seem counter-intuitive, but it's safer.
"If you're walking against the traffic and people are coming up behind you, you won't be able to see what's going on."
