Raise your spirits at Charleston Distilling Co.

Charleston Distilling Co. Charleston Distilling Co.
CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Breweries aren’t the only alcohol induced destinations popping up in the Holy City. Distilleries are also taking over the town.

That’s because an annual license that once cost owners about a half a million, now costs only $2500. That fee allows the holder to distill, retail and offer three one-half ounce tasting samples each day.

At the Charleston Distilling Company tasting room, those three ounce pours consist of their King Charles Vodka, Jasper’s Gin and a white whiskey liqueur. Did we mention that the tastings are free? That’s right. The distillery, which just opened on July 14th, offers free tours and tastings on the hour every Monday through Saturday.

Here are 5 Around Town’s five favorite things about the Charleston Distilling Company experience.

1 – It’s a farm to bottle local business. Our tour guide, head distiller Mikell Elliot, told us all the grains are provided by his cousin’s Flowers Farm in Summerton.

2 – The barrel room, which stores the whiskey, smells like booze and wood. Let’s just say it’s a very manly smell. And we mean that in a good way.

3 – The corn style vodka smells really good as well. With a sweet floral finish, the 80 proof 17 times distilled liquor is smooth with no ethanol burn going down.

4 – While the vodka has a floral taste, the gin has hints of bitter orange and lime flavor while the whiskey (not currently available for sale) contains a ginger and cinnamon taste. Think Fireball, but sophisticated.

5 – The restrooms are inside giant barrels. You’ve got to see it to believe it.

Bottles of the vodka and gin, currently available for sale on sight for $33-38, will be shipping out to local bars at the end of this month.

Located at 501 King Street, the distillery and tasting room is open 11am – 7pm, Monday through Saturday, and the beautifully rustic space is available for private parties and special events. For more information on Charleston Distilling Company, click here.
