Basket maker stays home to baby sit, misses deadly crash at basket stand

MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - A sweetgrass basket maker's life may have been saved Monday when she decided to stay home and babysit her grand kids.

While she was home, a car crashed into her basket stand, killing the 22-year-old driver.

Geneva Gathers has been making and selling sweetgrass baskets for more than fifty years.

She has her own spot at the intersection of Highway 17 and Hamlin Road.

On Monday, Gathers was suddenly put out of business.

"They called me and said 'Oh, a bad accident on the corner,' so I said let me check it out."

When Gathers got there, she saw her sweetgrass basket stand badly damaged.

Mt. Pleasant Police say a Myrtle Beach woman ran a red light, fishtailed, ran off the road and crashed into the basket stand.

The driver, a young woman from Myrtle Beach, died at the scene.

"I don't believe it. How it went through the stand and back there, I just didn't believe it," said Gathers.

Gathers easily could have been there when the accident happened. She's usually working at the stand during the day.

"Yeah, that's why I thank God," she said.

Gathers says until her stand is repaired, she will have to do business from her home.

She's says that's no problem and that she's thankful to be alive.
