Mother, son die after tire blows on I-95

A mother and her son died after the rear tire of their vehicle blew while they were traveling on Interstate 95 Monday afternoon.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. near mile marker 117, which is two miles south of the Paxville Highway exit.

Clarendon County Coroner Hayes Samuels identified the victims as 27-year-old Maria Susenna Ocompos and 11-year-old Onesimo Jimenez.

Samuels said the mother and son were in the right lane headed north when rear tire of their vehicle blew causing her to veer in left lane, strike another vehicle, and then hit a tree in the median.

Four other family members who were traveling in a separate vehicle were not hurt.

Samuels said the six were on their way back to Monroe, NC after visiting family in Beaufort, SC.
