DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - High school students in Dorchester County are now allowed to bring cell phones to school.
On Monday evening, the school board voted 6-0 to allow high school students to use cell phones during school but outside of class time.
The board says part of the reason the proposal passed so easily is because Ashley Ridge, Summerville, and Fort Dorchester high schools all piloted the new rule and all three principals said it was successful.
The principals say so many people broke the previous rule of no phones allowed during the school year that it was too difficult to enforce properly.
When it comes to student safety, members say the new rule will allow students to communicate with parents in emergencies and get a ride home if schedules changed.
The new cell phone rule will be in effect starting this fall.
