456 animals find homes during Charleston Animal Society adoption event

It has been a busy two weeks at the Charleston Animal Society, as a free adoption event led to hundreds of cats and dogs finding new homes.

The Great American Rescue Event came to an end Sunday after a crazy successful two week run at the Charleston Animal Society. Officials at the no kill shelter say a total of 456 animals were adopted during the fee-free event, which ran from July 22 to August 3.

The event was originally scheduled to run one week, but after a record-breaking 322 adoptions, staff at the animal shelter decided to extend it an extra week. The second week totals were not as huge - 134 total adoptions - but they still managed to double their weekly average of 60 to 70.

Dan Krosse, a marketing representative for the Charleston Animal Society, says The Great American Rescue Event was a way to combat over-crowding at the shelter, which sees its numbers balloon during the summer months.

Adopters came from all around, with folks in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia traveling down to Charleston to take home their new four-legged family members.
